Books

Hello dear reader!
My name is Melike Ak, and I am the creator of the children’s book series Carl and Teddy. I have extensive experience in early childhood education and currently work as a German teacher. I am passionate about supporting the cognitive and emotional development of young minds.
In addition, I have worked on several projects involving editing, proofreading, and translation, and I love writing—bringing stories and ideas to life. Drawing from my diverse background, I am inspired by cultures and countries around the world. Exploring new places enriches my understanding of literature, languages, and child development, and continually sparks new adventures for Carl and Teddy.
A little insight
In my mid-twenties, I felt the need for something new. So I quit my job and booked a one-way ticket. Well, it wasn’t quite that simple. I had lived my whole life in a small town in Germany, completed my education, and worked in a preschool. Although I always loved working with children, I wanted to learn more than what school alone could offer—and better understand how meaningful early education can shape a child’s future.
Growing up with a German mother and a Turkish father, I learned to navigate two very different worlds. I was raised in Germany but regularly visited my family in Turkey, who lived in a poorer part of the country. This helped me adapt to both environments and showed how access to education and learning opportunities can deeply influence children’s lives.
After an adventurous au pair year in the United States, I decided to continue my studies there. I enrolled at a university in California, even though I didn’t know the area or the people I would be living with in Silicon Valley. Rather than feeling afraid, I was excited to meet new people and experience new lifestyles and mindsets. That’s how I ended up on the other side of the world.
Because I have always found working with children deeply enriching, I continued working with them alongside my studies. This further strengthened my knowledge of early childhood education, deepening my understanding of how curiosity, emotional safety, and playful learning form essential foundations for a child’s development.
In the following years, my curiosity about new countries and cultures took me from Europe to North America, through Central America, down to the southern tip of South America, and to North Africa. These experiences help me connect authentically with an international audience. Combined with my belief in the importance of children’s education and their emotional and cognitive development, they inspired a children’s book series that not only teaches young readers about the world but also strengthens their emotional intelligence—playfully wrapped in adventurous stories.
Through my stories, I aim to open windows to different cultures and invite young readers on a global journey to discover their own potential.
